PAVEMENT MANAGEMENT FOR AIRPORTS

>>Back

Pavement Management is a systematic method for tracking and addressing pavement condition at the network level. Airports and aviation authorities are becoming busier by the day, and this trend is going to increase significantly in the near future. Heavy airport traffic makes it difficult to plan and carry out pavement preservation and repair projects. Runway closures must be minimized to avoid disruption of the traffic flow.

It is vital that the aviation authorities have the best tools available to quantify current pavement condition, anticipate future problems, and select and schedule the best repair strategy at the proper time.

Modern computer systems combined with technologically advanced pavement evaluation and management software can provide the aviation authority with the necessary tools to maximize pavement condition while minimizing costs and traffic disruption.

• How does a particular budget influence the overall pavement condition (visually,

PAVEMENT MANAGEMENT FOR AIRPORTS

APMS (Airport Pavement Management System) is designed to assist decision-makers in the process of managing a network of Airports pavements.
APMS is application software developed by Gulf Engineering House (GEH) for airport inventory, pavement condition analysis, reporting and pavement maintenance management for the civilian airports within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
APMS is a tool to quantify current pavement condition, anticipate future problems, select and schedule the best maintenance and rehabilitation (M & R) strategy at the appropriate time. This APMS combined with technologically advanced pavement evaluation and management software can provide the aviation authority with the necessary tools to maximize pavement condition while minimizing costs and traffic disruption.
Airport pavement management system provides a consistent, subjective and systematic methodological procedure for setting priorities and schedules, allocating resources, and budgeting for pavement maintenance & rehabilitation. The concepts of APMS are similar to what is outlined in FAA AC150/5380-7A.
The system is designed with User-friendly windows to allow the user to enter the inventory and condition data for the Airport network saved in the database or to enter new airports to the database.
The system capabilities are to store, retrieve, and process pavement related condition and inventory data, using the current condition, future performance, and expected monetary needs of pavement network. The flexible management environment makes APMS a powerful airport pavement management tool.

The following key features are incorporated and available within the developed APMS:

  1. Sectional data.
  2. Deterioration Performance Models.
  3. Key Performance Indicators.
  4. Maintenance Analysis in term of localized, global and major maintenance strategies, maintenance program based on either maintenance needs or maintenance budget (budgeting estimating or limited budget distribution).
  5. Rehabilitation Analysis and estimation for extended periods.
  6. Pavement Classification Number (PCN) and Aircraft Classification Number (ACN) are available with the number of load repetitions allowed on each branch or section.
  7. Boeing Bump Index (BBI) calculation and identifying the critical area which are in need for correction work to meet the BBI standard value.
